“A regular in the Brooklyn music scene in particular, and the New York art scene in general, Grant has been moving towards his vision of artistic authenticity for the last three and a half years. As an active member of [many different projects], hear one can hear how varied and complex Grant is as a musician and artist.” - Blaqbook magazine
Grant Zubritsky is a freelance bass player, singer, guitarist, and arranger based in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in the greater Philadelphia area, Grant was exposed to all types of music from a young age, taking up the saxophone at the age of ten. Quickly, the saxophone introduced Grant to a wide variety of music, including jazz, bossa, latin, and rock. Upon his arrival in high school, his interest for music and the arts began consuming his free time and even taking over his studying time. He began playing bass and guitar during the these high school years and soon after started cultivating his voice, primarily for backing vocals. His passion for music and visual arts took Grant to Hamilton College where he studied music and philosophy. These fields of study amalgamated into different projects that explored the aesthetic principles of beauty and how that translates into musical likes and dislikes.
While in college, Grant executed weekend tours with jazz and rock projects to such other colleges as Haverford, Cornell, Union, and Colgate, playing parties and other campus events. He immersed himself in the jazz program at Hamilton and was taken under the instruction of ‘Doctuh’ Michael Woods and Monk Rowe. Hamilton provided a creative atmosphere that allowed Grant to expand his musical horizons through diverse playing situations (jazz, blues, rock, funk). Newfound interests and influences catalyzed Grant’s playing and began informing his approach to music. Country, Dub, and Afrobeat approaches to music became just as important as the blues rock roots that originally steered him musicality. Today, Grant’s playing reflects his proficiency and versatility in all of these musical styles. In 2006, Grant spent his first prolonged visit (still only a matter of months) to New York City working for the A&R department of Blue Note Records and online marketing sector of Rehage Entertainment. These experiences gave Grant a taste of the industry side of the music industry. With the industry in a tumultuous time of uncertain flux, these months were crucial in helping Grant to decide how to approach a career as a musician from an educated perspective.
After an anticlimactic graduation from Hamilton College, Grant quick harkened back to NYC, placing himself in Brooklyn, where he remains today. From 2007 forward, Grant has been literally out on the town playing, arranging, and singing his way through a wide variety of musical projects. With each new venture, Grant seems to find new light on an ever-changing musical vision. Being bound by a certain style, type, or attitude no longer interests Grant and his recording and performing schedule reflects this mantra in a serious way.
Since Grant has moved to New York, he has had the privilege to play and study with so many amazing musicians. He has taken away something valuable from all the musical experiences here in NYC. Most important is a sense of open adventure to take on any project that appears interesting and explore the boundaries of that project. Grant is proud of his involvement in all his different projects, providing a different feel and style to an oversaturated market of monotony. Keep up to date with Grant through this website and the email list. Hope to see you out at a show sometime soon
