CFL Project

Incandescent lighting, which is only 10% efficient, is responsible for huge amounts of extraneous energy use on campus. Compact Florescent Lights (CFLs) are an alternative to incandescent bulbs. They use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer than traditional incandescent lights. In most cases, CFLs can be retrofitted to existing incandescent fixtures.
Replacing outdated incandescent lights with low mercury compact fluorescents, readily available for almost any application, is one of easiest ways to reduce our energy consumption with minimal changes in lifestyle or habit. Following in the footsteps of Australia and Great Britain, GGH is working to eliminate incandescent lighting from Hamilton College. One CFL saves an average of 34,000 kWh of energy, equivalent to 345,000 tons of CO2 over the course its life.
