Response from President Stewart
March 2, 2007
Dear Noelle,
Thank you for the commitment that you and your fellow alumni have demonstrated to sustainability issues. In recent weeks, my colleagues and I have spent considerable time discussing this vital issue. I believe in the cause and in Hamilton’s ability to make changes for the sake of our future. These goals are much on our mind as we strive to balance cost effectiveness, Hamilton’s welfare and the welfare of the planet. Let me begin by mentioning some recent initiatives and successes in our effort to be environmentally responsible in our operations, programs and planning.
- Hamilton was awarded Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for the renovation of Skenandoa (former Psi U fraternity house) - the oldest building in New York State to receive this designation.
- The Science Building’s geothermal technology has received a good deal of attention, including from representatives of other campuses who are contemplating replication of our system.
- In the EPA’s recent Green Power Challenge, Hamilton came in 5th among its NESCAC peers for purchasing 205,000 kwh of green power for Skenandoa.
- We are involved in the food salvage and recycling programs (as you mentioned) and are fully supportive of Bon Appetit’s “Farm to Fork” initiative.
- Our environmental studies program approaches sustainability from an academic viewpoint and raises awareness among students.
I have appointed Karen Leach, Vice President for Administration and Finance, as sustainability coordinator. Karen will convene a working group to develop a policy and make a recommendation on the feasibility of commiting to the President’s Climate Commitment. We will also assess Hamilton’s “green” initiatives and estimate what is involved in enhancing these efforts. Among the goals we are examining are reducing carbon emissions by 50% by the year 2020 and achieving total carbon neutrality in the next 20 years. I have a strong interest in joining this effort and intend to make an informed decision about our ability to meet the specific challenges required.
Given the success of the Skenandoa House renovation and the LEED certification we received, we are determined to renovate and build as many green features as possible. Our planned renovation and addition to the Kirner-Johnson Building will include energy efficient mechanical systems, environmentally friendly materials, and improved indoor environmental quality, although these initiatives will add to the overall project cost. In being good stewards of the environment, we also must be good stewards of the College.
I wish to thank you and your fellow signatories for your dedication to sustainability initiatives. I intend to provide more information to alumni on Hamilton’s progress in this area. Meanwhile, we are eager to welcome Vice President Gore to our campus in April and to raise awareness about environmental issues on campus and in the community.
Sincerely yours,
Joan Hinde Stewart
